Warning over new restaurant scam 13 Aug Action Fraud UK, the country’s fraud and internet crime reporting centre, says it has been alerted to new methods used by dating fraudsters. One includes the scammer telling the victim that they don’t have enough annual leave left to come and visit them but that they can buy some from their employer. They will then ask the victim to pay, and if they do, the fraudster might also ask them to pay for the flight. Another scam involves customs. In order to release it they claim they have to pay a customs release fee — which is then requested from the victim. From April to March , there were 2, cases of dating scams reported to Action Fraud, with the scams over the summer marking an acceleration. The online dating websites say there is little they can do to restrict this type of fraud. A spokesman for Match. Mr Cole told Ms Parke that he was a widower and that he had moved to Britain with his young daughter, Maureen. Through subtle manipulation, the fraudster encouraged Ms Parke to pay up.

From the web How this scam works The scammer will contact you out of the blue by email, letter, text message or through social media. Or they may tell you about a large inheritance that is ‘difficult to access’ because of government restrictions or taxes in their country. The scammer will then offer you a large sum of money to help them transfer their personal fortune out of the country.
Scammers may ask for your bank account details to ‘help them transfer the money’ and use this information to later steal your funds. Or they may ask you to pay fees, charges or taxes to ‘help release or transfer the money out of the country’ through your bank.

The Blame Game — online dating and stalking. Online dating sites are increasingly becoming the way that many of us form new relationships and as a lawyer specialising in Stalking and the Chair of Paladin the National Stalking Advocacy Service I was asked by BBC CrimeWatch to discuss the risks for users of these sites. The first thing that I was keen to get across was that there is one definite factor that causes mainly women to be stalked or assaulted by men that they meet online.
Nothing else causes or contributes to it just as only rapists cause rape. Not alcohol, short skirts, previous sexual history, dark streets or mixed tube carriages. Blaming victims for being abused is insulting, crass and colludes with the stalker or rapist as we focus on the behaviour of the victim rather than that of the perpetrator. It is simply misogyny and part of the reason that stalkers and rapists are rarely arrested and prosecuted and when they are why they receive such pitiful sentences.
We all use the Internet and social media. It is part of our lives just as using a car or taking the train is. Stalkers more often than not will stalk using online tools and by their physical presence as well.

Critics have accused the Poole-based firm of being “anti-police” and smearing officers – and customers and supporters of police have called for a boycott of the chain. The campaign is meant to call attention to Lush’s claims of “intrusive, abusive, political policing” – including women being tricked into sexual relationships for the sake of investigations – and for major changes to a public inquiry into undercover policing.
But it appears to have backfired into a PR disaster as it has angered customers and current and former police officers, who have complained that it is a “disgrace” that wrongly and unfairly paints all cops as corrupt. Lush has defended the campaign – which has been reported to the Advertising Standards Authority – and denied claims that it is “anti-police”. It uses the hashtag “spycops” on social media and is due to run through most of June after its launch on Thursday.
The campaign takes aim at undercover policing and in particular the activities of secretive Special Demonstration Squad of the Met Police, which infiltrated protest groups from the s to the s. The chain is supporting women who it says were tricked into sexual relationships with undercover officers, drawing attention to “human rights abuses” against them, and pressuring the government to make the inquiry more transparent. The Undercover Policing Inquiry into undercover policing in Britain is now taking place, but is still in its early stages despite opening three years ago.
Lush declined an interview request to discuss the public outcry, and instead sent a Mirror Online journalist a link to a press release on its website. The article says the officer had infiltrated an activist group called the Colin Roach Centre, in Hackney, north London, which had exposed corruption and systemic racism within the Met Police, as he pretended to be a fellow activist.
