This is exactly what the amp is made for, being played unmiked in in a gospel band in a seat church every Sunday. Warning nr 1 Weight. Warning nr 2 Volume and clean headroom. In a 50 year old vintage amp the condition of the speakers varies a lot. Beware of the weight, though. The plate voltage will increase a little when two of the tubes are removed. Ideally you should have the amp re-biased to not run the two remaining tubes too hard. But the delivered current is doubled with four tubes. Hence, the power is also doubled. This mod is a must-know survival trick for all Twin owners.

It’s just my opinion, but I think the slightly larger cab makes the amp sound even better. The thing is with this PR, I got it for a pretty good price in the first place. And I bought it for it’s functionality, not it’s ‘collectors value’. This is the faceplate it came with. The UPS story is kinda interesting.

Trem is best I’ve ever heard. Sweetest low volume clean sounds with p s volume control set higher to “m” on volume control gives perfect small stage volume, with a fulldrive 2 or other 2 channel pedal it’s all the rig an experienced player needs. Jazz tones thru classic or modern rock. Possibly one of the best kept secrets. Don’t agree with the princeton comparisons, and circut is better imho than delux. A perfect 10, if you have been around and know what good tone is.
Also make sure that the neck wood and lacquer is smooth and not braking and limiting your bend moves when in contact with your fingers. A guitar set up for SRV is not easy to master for entry-level players that favor easy-played low-action guitars with thin strings. After having listened to and played his music for some decades we are amused with how most players focus on all the minor details and tend to overlook the big important factors. But the Strat, as it is known, was the guitar that made the word “Fender” synonymous with “rock ‘n’ roll.
The SRV-tone can achieved with many different guitars, amps, pedals and speakers as long as you use them correctly together.
Fender Princeton Reverb DIY Build from a new reader: Part 1 Posted by decibellie on February 27, · 6 Comments This multi-part series is going to document a blog reader’s (Zack) journey from never having built an amp to finishing a Princeton Reverb, similar to the one I had written up months ago.
The source-date code on a pot is a 6 or 7 digit code impressed into the casing of the potentiometer. For speakers this code can be 5, 6, 7 or 8 digits long, and it’s ink-stamped or paint-stamped on the “bell housing” of the speaker. In either case, the code works the same. The first 3 digits on a pot, or the first 2, 3 or 4 digits on a speaker are the source or manufacturer code. The remaining 3 or 4 digits are the date code.
In 3 digit dates code, the 1st digit is the last digit of the year. On 4 digits date codes, the 1st and 2nd digits are the last two digits of the year. In either case, the remaining 2 digits are the week of manufacture 01 to With this in mind, remember if the last two digits of the source-date code are greater than 52, you’re not looking at the source-date code! Also it’s worth mentioning: On 3 digit date codes, you have to “guess” the decade of the pot or speaker.
Usually this isn’t too difficult.
Blackface Princeton Reverb® Style Combo Amp Kit
I have to say that once I made a couple of small changes, this amp is fantastic. The first thing I changed was the speaker. In my opinion, totally the wrong speaker for this amp. In the Deluxe Reverb, the Jensen was WAY too bright, had little warmth and just produced an overall harsh, brittle sound. With the Weber, the Brownie now has the sound I was hoping for. The P12Q turned out to be a perfect match for the Blues Deluxe too.

The circuit is completely original save for a recap with high quality electrolytic caps, featuring Sprauge Atoms in the power supply to keep the amp operating within original factory spec. With a complete vintage tube set including matched Sylvania 6V6 power tubes , this amp delivers the classic tweed tone with incredible dynamics, harmonic richness, and tonal clarity. The amp stays surprisingly clean with just the right amount of overdrive and very tight bass response for an amp with the original Jensen 10 speaker.
The tremolo is bias based, meaning that it turns the tubes on and off at a rate and intensity set by the controls, and has a nice strong pulse to it, with a smooth waveform that has a good amount of intensity and chop on tap. Aside from the aforementioned recap and one new CTS pot, the circuit is completely stock with original Triad transformers and the coveted yellow Astron tone caps still present.
The chassis is quite clean, with moderate patina on the chrome control plate. The majority of the original white lettering is intact, along with the stock chicken head knobs. The stock metal handle ends are intact along with a new leather handle that matches the style of the original. The stock gray two-prong power cord is still on the amp as well. The date code on the edge of the speaker frame translates to the 36th week of

The first Fender solidbody model, the Esquire , lasted in name only from June to October This model name was replaced by the “Broadcaster”, which lasted in name only from the October to January All Broadcasters have truss rods, where many Esquires often have no truss rod. In Gretsch had trademarked the name “BroadKaster” for a line of drums. After advertising the Broadcaster in music trade papers in February 20, , Gretsch took notice and sent Fender a telegram asking them to change their name.
Therefore Fender was forced to drop the name Broadcaster. Starting around February 22, , Fender cut the word “Broadcaster” off of their headstock decals. These models February to summer are known as “NoCasters”. Starting in the summer of , Fender adopted the name “Telecaster” for this model, and started using new decals after all the old clipped decals were used.

There is no reliable way to date amps other than to ask Fender customer support to look up the date from the serial number, although you may find a date code on the speaker. Early Tweeds The early green board tweed-covered amps were not lacquered. Once again, only the speaker is different. It is not old stock. It has the same cream board inside with the same components as every other current-production Blues Junior.
IMO, this is the way Fender should have built the PR, but I’m sure they didn’t because it then becomes too close in tone and volume to a real DR, and they needed more product differentiation.
I promise the tables will still be there after you finish reading. We also received a report of a tweed 5G12 Concert. The 5G12 Concert is the earliest version from very late and early so the existence of a tweed example, while extremely rare, is certainly plausible since Fender was making lots of tweed amps during the same time period.
Working at FMI — I was able to interview a fellow who wishes to remain anonymous who worked at Fender in in the amp department. Although his job was somewhat limited, his recollections provided some really fascinating insights to how the amps were built. For instance, he confirmed our assumption that the amp chassis were put into stock after being stamped with serial numbers and that the chassis were pulled from the stock bins randomly just as with Fender guitar neck plates.
The boss came around and said what we’d be building. The chassis weren’t used chronologically. Probably the same as the pots and transformers that we just dug out of the boxes. I think in the corners of the boxes were older pots remaining from earlier dates I think the better, older hands did 35 a day. Like I said, there were 5 or 6 of us at the benches every day.
But it wasn’t always ‘cool guitar’ amps, sometimes I was making Fender Rhodes Satellite amps on bent aluminum, sometimes only Champs.

The progress of this type of work is slow, hence the long hiatus, however, a lot of new data have been collected regarding Fender amplifiers, including production numbers. Advances have been made with regards to the production of tolex amps and it appears that much of this information can be applied to late s tweed amps as well. In addition, the dating-by-serial number tables have been revised and are more accurate.
The bad news is that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done on the silverface amps. Unfortunately, there is some sad news to report as well. Fellow Fender amp researcher, Greg Huntington, passed away June 5, after losing his battle with cancer.
I’ve found that silverface Fenders deliver most, if not all, of the characteristic Fender clean tone, reverb, and tremolo at decent prices even today, considering they are American-made, do not use printed circuit board construction, and were built more durably than many modern amps.

Much of this is due to an unefficient phase inverter circuit design. In build quality and component selection brands of caps, resistors, pots the silverfaces are not as robust as the blackface models. The glued and stapled baffles on the silverface amps is to us one of the bigger differences between the blackface and silverface amps, or should we say, the cabinets.

The best small harp amp on the planet now is the Memphis Mini!! But for my views of harp amps in , read on. Preamp tubes vary according to taste, usually a 12AX7. However, they can be nasal or boxy, and with only 5 watts of power they usually need PA support to be giggable. Having said all that, every harp player should own a small amp.

It has exactly the same chassis, circuitry and parts for contemporary models of these 2 amp but in a more manageable size and weight package head amp cabinet. That said, the heft of the head unit is still quite substantial, obviously due to the substantially oversized power and output transformers. IMO, the relatively big and heavy power and output transformers together with the solid state rectifier in these amps are the main factors that contribute to the well-known fender clean tone.
The big iron core in the output transformer just couldn’t get saturated that easily either. Fender clean tone for days! It has the transition “cloth wire” and not the irradiated Teflon “thin wires” widely used in and model Fender amps. It still has all its original transformers and all original capacitors. The big power filter capactors for sure will need to be replaced for safety reasons.
A Hammond choke was used to replaced the original choke which I found to be open. The cathode bypass electrolytics were replaced with sprague atoms.
